Mission
Center for Independent Artists exists as a producing,
convening and service organization for artists from diverse
physical, cultural, and aesthetic perspectives - offering a place
for
visibility, intersection, conversation and career support.
celebrates the role of
the independent artist as visionary in society. The Center
nurtures
independent artistic vision, fosters diverse cultural
perspectives and seeks to build an educated, enlightened
citizenry.
Organization
Center for Independent Artists (The Center) is a non-profit,
501(c)3 tax-exempt organization, co-founded in Minnesota
in March 2001 by theater artists Zaraawar Mistry and Leslye
Orr. The Center shares use of facilities in the beautiful Instituto
de
Cultura y Educacion building in south Minneapolis.
Instituto de Cultura y Educacion
The Instituto is a partnership between Center for
Independent Artists, El Colegio Charter High School, La
Escuelita and the Mira Gallery. The facility includes a theater
(with seating for up to 65) and several gallery spaces. There is
free
parking on-site and the building is a fully accessible venue.
Activities
The Center primarily works with individual artists who do
not
have the support of a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. The
Center
presents, and assists with the independent presentation of,
performances, workshops, exhibits and events. It provides
a variety of resources and services to artists and the public,
designed to promote the arts and cultural enrichment in

Membership
The Center is a membership organization, i.e. its members
may access its resources and services at discount rates. The
Center's
resources and services are also available to non-members.

Policy
The Center affirms its commitment to a policy of equal
work
opportunities to the elimination of discrimination, and to
project a positive model of equal opportunity and multi-
ethnic diversity within the arts community. It is the intent of
the organization that its activities be conducted in a
manner that provides fair opportunities to ethnic
minorities, women, seniors and persons with disabilities.
We maintain a policy of no discrimination of any person or
persons within the organization regardless of race,
religious beliefs, physical ability or sex.
